After the Spanish subjugation of the southern provinces, they decide once again to recognise the authority of Spain and conclude the Union of Arras. The seven northern provinces continue their armed resistance and conclude the Union of Utrecht, in which they agree to fight on and put an end to religious persecution. This lays the foundation for the eventual definitive split between the northern provinces (the Netherlands) and the southern ones (present-day Belgium).
